(Football news) Manchester United were stunned by a brilliant goal from Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise to claim a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park in the Premier League. Olise’s stoppage-time free kick canceled out Bruno Fernandes’ first half goal as it looked like that goal was set to give Man United their 10th win in a row in all competitions for the first time since the 2008-09 season. But the draw means that United failed to jump above Manchester City into second in the table, as they stayed below their rivals, who have played a game less.

Erik Ten Hag was frustrated as his side failed to build momentum after their come-from-behind victory over local rivals in the Manchester derby. Ten Hag’s woes got even worse as Casemiro was shown a second-half yellow card which meant that he will be suspended for Sunday’s match with Arsenal. Ten Hag subsequently made three changes from the 2-1 win over City and among them was Dutch striker Wout Weghorst who replaced the injured Anthony Martial to make his Manchester United debut.

Man United controlled possession in the first half against the home side who were happy to sit off their opponents. But there were few real chances for United as Weghorst’s best look at goal in the opening 45 minutes came when he sent a difficult header onto the roof of the net from a Luke Shaw cross. Ten Hag’s side were grateful for a spectacular save from David de Gea to prevent Palace scoring first. De Gea sprang into life in the 40th minute when he turned an Edouard shot from the edge of the box onto the crossbar with his outstretched fingertips.

Four minutes later United were ahead after Christian Eriksen was allowed to run clear onto a Casemiro pass down the left of the box before he picked out Fernandes in the middle with a pull-back. The in-form Portugal international composed himself before firing past Vicente Guaita to score in consecutive games for the first time this season. United should have had a penalty in the final 20 minutes when substitute Scott McTominay was brought down by USA defender Chris Richards who was making his first Premier League start but a VAR review upheld the no-penalty call. Palace began to apply some pressure on their opponents for the first time. It looked like United would do enough to hold on for the three points but Olise’s had other ideas as he made a stunning intervention.

“We’re not happy with a draw. We should have taken our chances and closed the game,” Fernandes said. “They scored a great goal at the end. Nothing we can do now. We have to look forward now. Other games are coming. We’re still doing good things. We’re really disappointed with the result but the next one is close.”

“In the last 15 minutes we put pressure on them. Michael scored that free kick,” Palace manager Patrick Vieira said. “It was tough, we worked hard and we got rewarded.”
