Ricky Ponting embarrassed with the Capitals’ bowling performance

(Cricket News) The head coach of the Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting showed his disappointment on the bowling performance of the side against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Delhi Capitals conceded a mammoth 272 runs, bowling first at Vizag.

Ponting described the team’s bowling display as unacceptable and embarrassed. Delhi eventually lost the game by a big margin of 106 runs. All the Delhi bowlers, except for Sumit Kumar conceded runs at an economy of 10 or more.

The Delhi skipper, Rishabh Pant did not help the team’s cause as well, missing a couple of chances of a potential review. The first one was in the fourth over, off the fourth ball from Ishant Sharma who was confident that Narine (batting on 24 at that stage) had edged the ball. But Pant was very late to signal to the umpire. Another chance was missed when Shreyas Iyer edged one to Pant, but they did not take the review.

The KKR top order destroyed the Delhi bowlers with the likes of Sunil Narine, and the young Angkrish Raghuvanshi scoring at more than 200. Narine scored a a scintillating 85 of just 39 balls, while Raghuvanshi scored his maiden fifty in just 26 balls. Russell who was promoted up the order further added to the wounds of the Capitals scoring a quickfire 41.

“It’s pretty hard to assess right now. I mean I was almost embarrassed with our first half of the game today,” said Ponting at the post-match press conference. “To concede that many runs…we bowled 17 wides and it took us two hours to bowl our overs as well, so we were two overs behind again, which means the guys bowling last two overs only get to bowl with four fieldsmen outside the circle.

“Lot of things happened in this game that were unacceptable and a lot of things we will talk as a group tonight that we have to fix immediately to go forward in the competition. There will be some good open discussions in the changing room for sure,” added Ponting.

“I thought the youngster at No.3 (Angkrish Raghuvanshi) played really well and that allowed Russ (Andre Russell) and all those guys to play the way they always play. And they had wickets in hand, so they can keep going hard. They did lots of things really well but we got to be really critical of ourselves, on our own performances, and we got to look at ways to get better for the next game,” Ponting said.
