(Tennis news) Due to numerous physical issues, the 28-year-old played in just one singles match at Stuttgart in June, losing to Wu Yibing of China, and was hardly ever seen on the court last year. He missed all four Grand Slams.

Despite being expected to return for the French Open, Kyrgios withdrew, citing a new foot injury sustained during a robbery where his mother was allegedly threatened at gunpoint by a man who stole his Tesla. Kyrgios did not play Down Under last year due to a knee injury, on which he underwent surgery.

Due to a ruptured wrist ligament, the Australian withdrew from his Wimbledon first-round match against David Goffin. He recovered from the injury for the rest of 2023, however it was hoped he would play in Melbourne for the first Grand Slam of the year.

In a social media video, Kyrgios stated, “I won’t be able to compete at the 2024 Australian Open,” he has since confirmed that he will not be competing at the Australian Open but would instead be a commentator.

“But even though I won’t be there competing this year at the AO, I still will be around, commentating matches. I’ve got some special things planned, so please be excited.

“I’ve had so many amazing memories there and I just want to really get back to playing at the top of my game and doing it right and I need a little more time.”

Due to his extended absence, Kyrgios’s rating in the ATP fell to 192 in September. His only other finish at the Australian Open is a quarterfinal performance in 2015.
