(Football news) Newcastle have officially qualified for the next season’s UEFA Champions League after a goalless draw against Leicester City. Last time Newcastle qualified for Europe was in 2013 when they reached the Europa League quarter finals. Their last Champions League appearance was in the 2003/04 season when they failed to make it past the qualifying rounds. Newcastle’s last appearance in the Champions League group stages was in 2002/03. Just one and a half season under new ownership has been enough to get Newcastle back at the top which is an incredible achievement.

The match in itself was dominated by Newcastle who had 78% possession and 4 shots on target. The home side hit the woodwork 3 times but just couldn’t score. Leicester City have had a very disappointing season and that showed in this game as they had only 1 shot in the entire game.

The draw was a very important result for Leicester as they are now level on points with Leeds United while Everton are 2 points ahead. The relegation battle is going to go down to the wire. Southampton are already related so now two of Leeds, Leicester and Everton will go down. The good news for Leicester is that they have a much better goal difference than the other two teams.

Leicester City have to win their home match against West Ham and hope that Everton don’t beat Bournemouth. For Leeds to stay up they have to win their match against Tottenham Hotspur and hope that Everton lose and Leicester don’t win. Midway through the last season Newcastle were in a relegation battle but under new ownership and under Eddie Howe their fortunes have changed. Their last match of the season is away at Chelsea which is a good opportunity for the players to enjoy themselves after an incredible season.
