Mumbai Indians registers an emphatic win over the UPW

(Cricket News) Mumbai Indians, on Thursday registered a stellar 42-run victory over the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. With their win the Mumbai Indians moved up to the second spot in the points tables, just behind the Delhi Capitals.

Having won the toss Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of Mumbai Indians decided to bat first. Their decision however did not provide them with early rewards, as both their openers were dismissed cheaply by  Chamari Athapaththu, reducing them to 17/2. They managed to score just 37 runs in the powerplay.

Sciver-Brunt then joined hands with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to revive MI’s innings. They both stitched a 59-run partnership and ensured that the runs kept on flowing. Gayakwad, who wasn’t having the best of the days, managed to dismiss Sciver to provide a breakthrough. Harmanpreet too followed her companion after a brief 28-run stand with Amanjot. Deepti Sharma further dismissed Amanjot to reduce MI to 117/5 in 15.4 overs.

The MI innings seemed to be derailed, but Amelia Kerr and Sajana had different plans. Both the batters put up a solid display of batting towards the end to power the Mumbai Indians to 160 runs in their 20 overs.

Chasing 161, the UP Warriorz were never really in the game. They had a horror start losing 3 wickets with just 15 runs on the board. Grace Harris and Deepti Sharma tried to hang around but only managed to score 26 together, that too off 31 deliveries.

Deepti held on one end and scored a half century, while the Warriorz kept on loosing wickets from the other. All they managed to put up was 118 runs in the 20 overs, facing their 4th defeat of the season and further hampering their qualification chances.
