(Football news) According to reports, the Blues will pay a base sum of £100 million plus £15 million in performance-based bonuses. Brighton has given Caicedo permission to visit Chelsea for a medical, which is scheduled to happen today. The midfielder will commit to an eight-year deal with an additional year’s option.
As part of the $115 million deal to sell Caicedo, Brighton will have a sell-on provision that has been called “significant.” The midfielder will cost the Blues £100 million up front with a further £15 million.
The add-ons have been divided into two categories: those that are “quite easily achievable” and those that are “much harder” to complete.
Caicedo and Liverpool had an agreement in place for a £111 million transfer earlier this week, but the deal fell through after the 21-year-old told the club he wanted to join Chelsea.
Caicedo had been scheduled for a medical trip to Liverpool on Friday after Jurgen Klopp’s team had a bid approved by Brighton after a deadline for bids on Thursday at midnight.
However, the Ecuadorian international had a change of heart and informed Liverpool that he did not want to join after the Reds’ 1-1 Premier League draw at Chelsea on Sunday.
“I’m desperate for him to come to Liverpool as the need for him there is probably greater,” said Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher. “It’s going to be a big blow.”
Caicedo, who Chelsea has been after all summer, chose to stay in London and made it clear that he only wanted to leave Brighton for Chelsea.
The £115 million sum surpasses the £106.8 million Chelsea spent for Enzo Fernandez in January, when they broke the British transfer record. Declan Rice cost Arsenal £105 million earlier this summer.
This summer, Chelsea wants to add two midfielders to their roster. The west Londoners are also close to reaching a deal with Southampton to bring in Romeo Lavia, who is still wanted by both Liverpool and other teams.
Chelsea, Liverpool, and Southampton are still in communication with the signing of midfielder Romeo Lavia.
Both clubs have yet to agree on a transfer fee at this point, however Sky Sports claimed on Friday that Chelsea was close to a deal. Neither club anticipates having a problem with personal issues.
Lavia wasn’t included in Southampton’s lineup for Saturday’s 4-4 tie with Norwich. Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, stated that the midfielder was not “in the right frame of mind to play” and that they were “eeking towards a conclusion” regarding his future.
