Martin Demichelis is set to become the manager of River Plate

(Football news) Current Bayern Munich II coach Martín Demichelis was pondering a possible return to Argentina after River Plate made an inquiry not too long ago. But now he is all set to become the new head coach of River Plate. Bayern’s website made it official: Demichelis agreed to terminate his contract and his replacement will be Holger Seitz, the same person the former Man City player and Danny Schwarz succeeded as Bayern II head coach.

The 41-year-old Demichelis became the head coach of Bayern Munich's reserve sides in 2019 after spending a season as an assistant manager with Malaga. River Plate’s former manager Gallardo won 14 titles including two Copa Libertadores with the Argentinian giants as he is stepping down after eight years in charge with the club. Demichelis was the main defender for Argentina in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup. After he retired from playing professional football, Demichelis started working with Bayern Under-19s in 2019 and then subsequently moved to the under-21s then the reserve team. Demichelis played for River Plate in 2000 but after three years he went to Bayern, where he won four Bundesligas. He has also gone on to play for Malaga, Manchester City and Espanyol.

Bayern sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić, said that  “the chance to coach River Plate is a huge thing for Demichelis and that they didn’t want to stop him. We didn’t want to deny him this unique opportunity and agreed to his wish to terminate his contract. I regret his departure, nonetheless. Martín did that very well for Bayern and we wish him every success on his return to River Plate.”

Demichelis was proud to be a player and coach for Bayern and was grateful for the time he spent with the Rekordmeister. “I came to Europe as a player from River to FC Bayern, now I’m going the opposite way as a coach. What an incredible story. I am proud to have been part of the FC Bayern family twice and would like to thank everyone who made this possible for me and who supported me. I’m leaving this club with a lot of gratitude in my heart and I’m now looking forward to the big task at my second heart club.”
