(Football news) Marcel Sabitzer, a midfielder for Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, has signed a four-year contract with Borussia Dortmund. The 29-year-old Austrian vice-captain underwent a medical and agreed to a contract that runs through June 2027, according to his new club.

“I can hardly wait to finally join the team and wear the BVB jersey,” said Sabitzer, whose deal is reported to be worth 19 million euros ($21m). “The talks with the Borussia Dortmund management were outstanding and have shown me how ambitious the club wants to be in the coming years.’’

“I would like to play my part in ensuring that BVB achieve their objectives and have every reason to celebrate something special with their fans again as soon as possible.”

Sabitzer joined Bundesliga team RB Leipzig in 2014 after beginning his professional career in Austria at Admira Wacker and playing a season at Rapid Vienna. After spending a year on loan at Salzburg, he signed with Bayern Munich in 2021. He has appeared in 185 Bundesliga games and 32 Champions League contests overall. He has 71 total Austrian caps.

Marcel Sabitzer was loaned by the German club to Manchester United in February of the previous year, where he played 18 appearances across all competitions until suffering an injury in May.

After being held to a 2-2 draw at home by Mainz on the last day, Dortmund lost to Bayern on goal differential to finish second in the Bundesliga last year.
