(Football news) Wigan is renowned for having won the FA Cup twelve times, most recently in 2015–16, after defeating Manchester City in the championship game. Man United has won the trophy twelve times. 

 Wigan will go into the glamourous match on Monday fresh from a 1-1 draw in League One against Barnsley, where the points were split in South Yorkshire with Jonathan Smith offsetting Devante Cole’s first-half goal.

After the outcome, the Latics are now in 17th place in the standings with 27 points from their 25 league games this season. However, they began the season with eight points less than they would have liked because of financial difficulties.

It will require work in the second half of the season to put Shaun Maloney’s team, who were demoted from the Championship the previous season, in the running for promotion. They are now four points above the relegation zone in League One and thirteen points out of the playoff spots.

Wigan, who have defeated York City and Exeter City in the FA Cup this season, last faced Man United in the competition’s fourth round in January 2017, losing 4-0 to the Red Devils. In fact, Wigan has lost three of their previous four meetings with the 20-time English champions by that same score.

The team’s only victory over Man United came in the Premier League, where they defeated them 1-0 at home in April 2012. However, it’s safe to say that both teams have undergone significant change since then, and Wigan has recently won the FA Cup, taking home the trophy after defeating Man City 1-0 in the championship game in 2012–13. 

Only Arsenal (14) has won the FA Cup more frequently than Man United (12). The Red Devils’ most recent victory came in 2016, when they defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 in the championship game.

After losing 2-1 to Man City in the competition’s final, Erik ten Hag’s team believes that this tournament is their best chance of winning.
