Messi and Inter Miami: Chasing MLS History

Messi and the Herons are aiming for an elusive milestone after assisting Inter Miami in winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield in his first full season with the team. They have the ability to beat the record of the New England Revolution (73) for the most points won in a regular season. With one game remaining, Inter Miami plays New England, and they are currently on 71 points!

Lionel Messi and the Inter Miami club have placed their sights on an elusive record after the latter helped the former Herons win the MLS Supporters’ Shield. Messi recently secured Inter Miami’s MLS Supporters’ Shield victory with a brace against the Columbus Crew.

Messi and his team have made a fantastic comeback from previous year, when they placed last in the MLS Eastern Conference. But in 2024, the Herons have been unstoppable thus far. The newly established MLS team is attempting a historic achievement under manager Gerardo Tata Martino.

Inter Miami has a chance to break the New England Revolution record for the most points in a single season with one game left in their regular season matchups before the MLS playoffs begin. In 2021, New England Revolution became the first team in MLS history to earn 73 points in a single season.

To top their historic feat, Messi and Miami, who are now on 71 points, would need to win their last regular season matchup against New England. The Herons can only set a new record with a victory over the Revs. Consequently, New England’s goal will be to defeat Miami and prevent them from picking all three points. If the Herons succeed in doing so, they will also break the record for most points in a single season.

After Miami’s victory over the Crew, Julian Gressel, a midfielder for Miami, told MLSsoccer.com, “I think we’d all be lying if we said it doesn’t matter.”

“We now have a reason to compete in front of our home supporters. It goes beyond a game. We have a chance to win, which would be a great way to round off the year with a record-breaking campaign,” he continued.

A only four Major League Soccer teams have hit the elusive 70-point plateau thus far. The only other clubs in the league were New England (2021), LAFC (2019), and New York Red Bulls (2018). Along the way, Inter Miami set a number of other milestones. They are currently 10 games undefeated and tied CF Montréal (2022) for the most road victories (11) in a single season since the post-shootout period.

To overcome the Eastern Conference Wild Card winner in their Round One Best-of-3 Series match, the Herons will rely on their illustrious captain, Lionel Messi. On December 7, they would aim to win the MLS Cup.

The way that Messi plays for Inter Miami has also affected team chemistry. His style of play pushes colleagues to improve their performance by requiring a specific level of technical proficiency and comprehension. This change may result in a more competitive environment and enhanced team cohesion.

Soccer in the US is now more exciting than it was when Messi was signed. His charm and star power are contributing to the sport’s increased popularity, especially in a market where soccer is still in search of a wider mainstream audience despite its steady growth.

In addition to drawing sponsorships, media interest, and higher attendance, his presence revitalizes the league and further ingrains soccer into American sports culture. Messi is seen as a revolutionary figure in MLS because of his unwavering dedication to success and capacity to motivate everyone around him, even in the face of difficulties adjusting to a new league.

Lionel Messi’s tactical approach is marked by his incredible positioning, allowing him to exploit space both as a playmaker and a goal scorer. He often drops into midfield to receive the ball, creating opportunities and disrupting defenses. His dribbling skills enable him to navigate tight spaces, while his quick acceleration changes the game’s tempo.

As Inter Miami prepares for the playoffs, the stakes are high. Their journey in the postseason will rely on Messi’s leadership and skill. The Herons aim not only to make history with the most points in a season but also to contend for the MLS Cup.

The transfer of Lionel Messi to Inter Miami marks a major turning point in both his remarkable career and American soccer history. His impact is not limited to the field; it also affects the league’s expansion, marketing opportunities, and the progress of upcoming players. The soccer community will be keenly observing him as he continues to adjust to his new environment to see how his presence affects Inter Miami’s and MLS’s future.
