Liverpool edge Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a Premier League classic

Diogo Jota's late goal sealed a memorable 4-3 win for Liverpool after Tottenham fought back from 3-0 down

(Football news) Liverpool leapfrogged Tottenham in the Premier League standings after Diogo Jota scored a stoppage-time winner. Liverpool clinched a remarkable 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur to bolster their hopes of qualifying for Europe. Liverpool took a 3-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes as Tottenham’s defense again crumbled, but the visitors made an extraordinary comeback as substitute Richarlison’s stoppage-time header appeared to have earned them an unlikely point.

Jota, who came on as a substitute, broke Tottenham’s hearts and helped Liverpool move past the Londoners into fifth place in the table. Curtis Jones put the hosts in front and two minutes later Tottenham’s defense conceded again as this time Luis Diaz volleyed home for his first goal in over 6 months. Salah blasted a penalty high in the 15th minute as it looked like Tottenham would repeat the horror show at Newcastle United when they conceded five goals in the opening 21 minutes in a 6-1 hammering.

Spurs supporters were seen leaving early as fans started chanting “We want our money back”. The visitors against the run of play scored through Harry Kane as he volleyed past Alisson in the 39th minute. Tottenham in the second half came all guns blazing as they saw Son and Cristian Romero’s rebound off the post. It looked like Liverpool finally sorted things at the back but Son made it 3-2 in the 77th minute and set up a nerve-jangling ending.

Richarlison sent the Tottenham fans into ecstasy when his glancing header bounced into the net but within a minute their joy turned to dismay as Jota scored with a slow shot. Liverpool currently have 56 points from 33 games while Tottenham are on 54 points from 34 games. Liverpool remain seven points behind Manchester United who have played one game less. The teams who finish fifth and sixth will likely qualify for the Europa League next season.
