Leverkusen confident that Alonso will stay

Director Fernando Carro is optimistic that Xabi Alonso, the head coach, will stay at Bayer Leverkusen once the current campaign concludes
Leverkusen

(Football news) Alonso was drawing interest from other places as he helped Leverkusen move out of the relegation zone and into the top six of the Bundesliga in 2022–2023. Nevertheless, Leverkusen’s performance this season has elevated his stature; in 38 games across all competitions, his team has not yet suffered a defeat.

In addition to leading Bayern Munich by 10 points at the moment in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen has advanced to the DFB-Pokal semi finals and the quarterfinals of the Europa League. Even though Alonso has repeatedly stated that his primary priority is his life at Leverkusen, rumours that he will receive offers from other teams are unavoidably persistent.

Liverpool and Bayern – two of his former clubs from his playing days – are both keen on the Spaniard as they prepare for life after Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel respectively.

Other clubs may also come into the mix in due course, yet the English and German giants are generally regarded as the frontrunners for the 42-year-old’s signature. Carro has revealed that he has few concerns over Alonso taking on a new challenge at this stage of his managerial career.

Carro said: “He has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here. In football you never know what will happen. But I have a lot of trust, we have a very good relationship.

“I’m very relaxed, like [sporting director] Simon Rolfes. We have been planning the squad for next season for a long time – with Xabi Alonso.

“We have a list of coaches that is always updated, we have to be prepared in case things turn out differently than we think. But I don’t think it will happen like that.”

Alonso is currently getting ready for many important games, the first of which is a league match on March 30 following the international break against Hoffenheim.

Four days later, the DFB-Pokal last-four matchup with Fortuna Dusseldorf will take place, and on April 18, the two-leg quarterfinal matchup in the Europa League against West Ham United will conclude.
