LaLiga Sues CSD Over Registrations

In the wake of a contentious ruling by the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) concerning player registrations, the La Liga regulatory body, led by Javier Tebas, is taking important legal action.  LaLiga has officially appealed the CSD’s recent approval of FC Barcelona’s Dani Olmo and Pau Victor’s registrations in an ordinary court.  Laliga is adamant that the established regulatory framework pertaining to economic controls is seriously undermined by this decision.

LaLiga claims that the April 3 CSD resolution transgresses important standards pertaining to economic supervision and sports license processing.  They contend that this compromises the idea of fairness among teams in addition to damaging the competition’s legitimacy.  In light of these facts, LaLiga feels that a prompt legal response is necessary, highlighting the need for interim measures that would ensure both the financial viability of professional football and the balance of competition.

This intensification follows the denial of Olmo and Victor’s registrations by La Liga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on January 4.  Despite President Joan Laporta’s tireless efforts to broker a 100 million euro deal for the VIP boxes at the forthcoming Camp Nou, they felt that FC Barcelona had not complied with the financial fair play rules as of the end of the 2024 fiscal year, which led to their decision.

FC Barcelona challenged the denials to the CSD, who at first issued temporary remedies.  But on April 3, the CSD reaffirmed its position and allowed the player registrations, paving the way for LaLiga’s most recent legal battle.
