Karim Benzema becomes Real Madrid’s 2nd highest goalscorer

(Football news) Real Madrid on Wednesday defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup final to start their season with a trophy. David Alaba scored the opening goal while Karim Benzema scored in the 2nd half to put the game to bed. The goal was Karim Benzema's 324th for Real Madrid which took him past Raul and made him Los Blancos' 2nd highest goalscorer of all time only behind Cristiano Ronaldo who has 451 goals. Raul scored 323 goals in 741 appearances whereas Benzema has scored 324 in just 606. The stat is more impressive considering the fact that Benzema spent the majority of his Real Madrid career playing 2nd fiddle to Ronaldo.

Benzema has been a Real Madrid first team player for 13 seasons, going into the 14th now and for majority of it he has been the first choice striker. To stay at a club like Real Madrid for so long where the demands are so high is not easy. Benzema has always been an integral part of the team but his goalscoring form hasn't always been great. Much of it has been down to Cristiano Ronaldo's dominance in that area but since his departure Benzema has been scoring goals for fun. He was the top scorer in the La Liga and the Champions League this season. The Frenchman's contribution to the team is so much more than just the goals he scores. It wouldn't be wrong to say that he is a number 9 and a number 10 and can do whatever is needed in a certain situation.

The UEFA Super Cup was also Benzema's first trophy as the club captain, a role which he was given after the departure to Marcelo. Karim Benzema will be eyeing Cristiano Ronaldo's record next which will be a very difficult task as he is 127 goals behind. The Frenchman has only 1 year left on his current contract and he will be 35 years of age when that contract ends. Real Madrid have a policy of giving only 1 year deals to players above 35 no matter how good they are as seen in the case with Luka Modric. If Benzema keeps on doing what he is doing then he will definitely be offered an extension. It will be interesting to see if he is offered an extension of more than a year. If not there is a doubt whether Benzema will accept a 1 year extension.
