Real Madrid comfortably clinch the Super Cup with win over Frankfurt

(Football news) Real Madrid defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup final to start the season with a trophy. This was a historical trophy for Los Blancos as they equalled Barcelona and AC Milan as the clubs with the most UEFA Super Cup titles with 5. This win also makes Carlo Ancelotti the manager with the most UEFA Super Cup titles with 4. This was also Real Madrid's 99th official trophy and the 30th trophy under the leadership of President Florentino Perez. The match in the end was pretty comfortable for Real Madrid who proved to be too good for Frankfurt. Both the teams lined up with the same line-up as they did in the Champions League and Europa League final respectively barring Filip Kostic for Frankfurt who had secured a move to Juventus.

Frankfurt started the game really well by testing Thibaut Courtois a couple of times. After that Real Madrid's legendary midfield trio took charge of things. The Los Blancos came very close to taking the lead after Karim Benzema set up Vinicius Jr but the Brazilian's shot was cleared off the line by Tuta. Real Madrid continued to create chances and finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Toni Kroos' corner was attacked by Benzema which was destined to go out but Casemiro played it back to Alaba who tapped it into an empty net with no one marking him. The champions of Europe stepped on the gas after breaking the deadlock to try and put the game to bed.

The Merengues were constantly threatening Frankfurt's goal and they finally succeeded as Karim Benzema scored. The Frenchman’s goal was his 324th Real Madrid goal which made him the 2nd highest goalscorer in Real Madrid's history ahead of Raul and only behind Cristiano Ronaldo. After going 2-0 down, Frankfurt looked dead and buried. Carlo Ancelotti made a few substitutions to freshen things up and also handed an official debut to Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Real Madrid will take this confidence into their opening La Liga game away against newly promoted Almeria
