Juventus keep their slim Champions League qualification hopes alive

(Football news) Juventus continued their good form as they maintained their slim hopes of making it to next season’s Champions League. Filip Kostic scored a goal which earned them a narrow 1-0 win against Inter Milan in Serie A on Sunday. Kostic opened the scoring midway through the first half to put Juve in front, who in January were deducted 15 points by an Italian court for their transfer dealings as they are currently on 41 points after 27 games.

They now trail fourth-placed AC Milan, who occupy the last Champions League qualifying spot as they are six points after the defending champions lost 3-1 to Udinese on Saturday. Inter on the other hand are third on 50 points and are subsequently 21 points behind runaway leaders Napoli and two off Lazio, who moved up to second place thanks to their 1-0 win against AS Roma.

Nicolo Barella had a couple of opportunities denied by Wojciech Szczesny as Inter dominated the early stages as Champions League quarter-finalists couldn’t capitalise on the early pressure. But Juve against the run of play went ahead in the 23rd minute when Kostic scored from a low crossed shot after being set up by Adrien Rabiot. The goal was given after a lengthy VAR review following a suspected handball by Rabiot. Some good defending by Matteo Darmian denied Dusan Vlahovic to score early in the second half but the hosts lacked a cutting edge up front and ended up with their third defeat in the last four Serie A games.
