Spinner Praveen Jayawickrama of Sri Lanka was charged on Thursday, August 28, by the International Cricket Council for violating its anti-corruption policy. The 25-year-old is accused of breaking three different codes during the 2021 Lanka Premier League season and in international cricket.
Among them are violations of:
Article 2.4.4: Neglecting to promptly notify to the Anti-Corruption Unit the specifics of an approach he was approached with regarding the possibility of manipulating future international matches.
Article 2.4.4: Neglecting to promptly report to the Anti-Corruption Unit the specifics of an approach where he was urged in order to carry out match-fixing in the 2021 Lanka Premier League on behalf of a corrupter.
Article 2.4.7: Disregarding messages that contain approaches and offers to participate in corrupt behavior in order to obstruct the inquiry.
The ICC has charged Jayawickrama, and he has until August 20 to reply. The sport’s governing body also has the authority to take action over the charges he faces related to his offenses in the Lanka Premier League in 2021 alongside his international cricket transgressions.
Since making his debut for the national squad in May 2021, Jayawickrama has participated in five matches in each format of the game. June 2022 saw him make his last appearance for Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 international match against Australia. He was not included in the starting lineup for any of the games, although he was part of Sri Lanka’s 2022 Asia Cup winning team.
