Is Antony finally justifying his price tag?

(Football news) It’s fair to say that Manchester United winger Antony has had an underwhelming start to his career at the Red Devils. The Brazilian hasn’t really lived up to his enormous £81m price tag but has justified his lack of output with his tireless work rate and adaptability to Ten Hag’s system.

The Brazilian became the fourth most expensive signing in Premier League history after joining Manchester United for an initial fee of 95m euros £81.3m in August. So far, he has managed to score eight goals and registered two assists in 35 appearances across all competitions.

Heading into the match against Forest, Antony had not scored for six games but the player proved to be decisive and instrumental in both the goals scored. He broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute and provided the assist to Diogo Dalot with 14 minutes on the clock.

While the Brazilian may not have the numbers to justify his price tag, he has scored goals against Arsenal, Manchester City and Barcelona this season and understands the system that Ten Hag wants to implement. He also provides incredible work rate and cover for the full back, which has been vital in Manchester United’s season so far.

While £81m is a high price for any player, it’s important to remember that Antony shouldn’t be judged for a price tag he didn’t set, instead he should be assessed by the impact made on the team. In that aspect, Antony might not have made the impact that Casemiro or Lisandro Martinez have had, but he is an important cog in Ten Hag’s system, more so now in Marcus Rashford’s absence.
