Inter beat Juventus in a dramatic Supercoppa Italiana final

(Football news) Inter continued their golden run as they picked up their first trophy of the season by beating Juventus 2-1 in what was a drama filled final. The home crowd, reduced to 50% capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, exploded with joy when the Chilean substitute profited from a defensive mix-up to strike in the 120th minute and decided the 'Derby of Italy' clash between two historic rivals.

In the first half  Juventus took the lead and struck in the 25th minute when McKennie headed home from six yards. The lead lasted only 10 minutes, as Mattia De Sciglio tripped Edin Dzeko in the area to give Martinez the chance to bury a spot kick. In the second half, Denzel Dumfries went closest with his header but it was palmed onto the post by Mattia Perin, as it became the first Supercopppa to go to extra time since 2016. A penalty shootout was looming on the horizon as both sides appeared to be struggling to create chances. But in the dying moments of the match a moment of hesitation in the defence cost Juve, as Alex Sandro tried to chest a cross back to Perin, allowing Matteo Darmian to pounce on the weak pass who then set up Alexis Sanchez who buried the ball in the back of the net cooly.

This was Simone Inzaghi’s first trophy ever as he was  happy with the performance and the result, and so is the club President Zhang, he stated.“He was very happy, he congratulated us and the players asked for a gift,” he stated. “I think he’ll make them happy.”Of the match, he stated that “We came up against a great team who showed what Juve are all about. They didn’t give us too many problems, but we also played a great match. They were always in it, they wanted to win”

He added. “Beating them is never easy, even if I’ve done it before against them in the Supercoppa. I’m very happy with how things went.”Of goalscoring hero Alexis Sanchez, Inzaghi stated that. I think everyone always wants to play, from time to time I have to make decisions. Remember that Gagliardini was the best player against Lazio, but he didn’t play a single minute here,” he added. I have four very good forwards, today Vidal also contributed, and Dimarco was important for the decisive goal.  We have to keep on going like this, Inter hadn’t won a Super Cup for twelve years. It’s been too long for this club.”

"The more a champion plays, the better he is, and he does things nobody else can do. Today it was like that. I thought I would start because I was in form, I respect the coach but I was hungry to win… I felt like a caged lion."Sanchez told the media after starting the game on the bench
