(Football news) Although he started just 12 times in the Premier League and made 56 appearances for United last season, Fred was mostly a backup option. Since then, Mason Mount has joined the team, increasing competition for the Brazilian’s midfield spots.

He was first demoted in the Old Trafford pecking order by the additions of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro last summer.

Fred was sought after by Fulham, but they were unwilling to pay the asking price. Fred left Shakhtar Donetsk for United in the summer of 2018 for close to £50 million, beating out Manchester City.

The player’s representatives were also contacted by Nottingham Forest and Roma, but neither team pursued the matter further.

The mid-July approach from Galatasaray was turned down because it didn’t meet the £20 million asking price, since then United has since decided to sell for a lower price.

The sum of the agreement reached with Fenerbahce, including add-ons, is £13 million (€15 million). Additionally, N’Golo Kante, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Ruben Neves from the Premier League were all offered the chance to join the Saudi Pro League this summer, but Fred turned them down.

Rasmus Hojlund, a recent acquisition, will likely receive Fred’s number 17 jersey after he leaves Old Trafford. The Danish striker has not yet been given a squad number and is now recovering from a preseason injury that will postpone his club debut. He had been sporting 17 in Atlanta.
