(Football news) The former Burnley captain Ben Mee is set to join Brentford on a free transfer after reportedly agreeing to a two-year deal. The 32-year-old defender rejected offers from two other Premier League clubs and one offer from Major League Soccer. Mee had left Burnley at the end of his contract after 11 years with the club, becoming Thomas Frank’s fourth signing of the summer. Brentford have already brought in left-back Aaron Hickey, winger Keane Lewis-Potter and goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha from Lazio this season in the Premier League.
The arrival of Mee will provide a wealth of experience to a team that finished 13th last season in the Premier League as they conceded 56 goals. Frank has been keen to bring in the centre-back because of fitness issues over Ethan Pinnock and Kristoffer Ajer, who could well miss the start of the season. The veteran player was unable to help Burnley in their bid for survival in the Premier league towards the end of last season, after he picked up an injury against Leicester City on March 1. The Englishman also helped caretaker boss Mike Jackson in an assistant manager role on the touchline for the remaining couple of months, but is now set to return to the Premier League with Brentford.
Reports came out on Wednesday that the Bees were in talks to sign the free agent ahead of the 2022-23 season, and after reportedly agreeing personal terms, Mee looks set for a move to West London. The move outlines the concerns that Thomas Frank is facing in the defensive department ahead of their season opener against Leicester on August 7, with both their starting centre backs Ethan Pinnock and Kristoffer Ajer set to miss the game due to injury. Mee is tasked with filling that gap in Brentford's defence, and will bring with him the experience of over 200 Premier League matches with Burnley.
