Flick Eyes Present, Future Unclear

Hansi Flick is on the verge of taking Barcelona to its first Champions League semifinals since Ernesto Valverde in 2019, with just ninety minutes separating him from a historic milestone.  Flick spoke on his future amid rumors that he would extend his current contract, which expires in 2026, given the club is still in the running for several titles this season.  “I cherish what I have,” he declared.  Although I enjoy working for the greatest team in the world, I’m not the type of coach who commits to a three-year contract in order to protect his future.  My approach is to tackle things one year at a time.  I want to see what occurs at the end of the year.  To make sure everyone is happy, we will proceed step-by-step.”

Flick has previously stated that he prefers to concentrate on the here and now rather than lingering on talks for the future.  “I want to end my work on a good note, but I’m not sure how much time I have left.  There is still a lot to accomplish, therefore we are concentrating on this season.  I want to do things that way,” he said.

In his lengthy words, which lasted more than four minutes, Flick expressed how much he values this new phase outside of his homeland.  “My wife and I have a great time in Barcelona.  I think this team still has a lot of potential, therefore I have a lot of enthusiasm and lots of ideas for growth,” he said, avoiding talking about winning championships this season.

Flick went into detail on the collaboration between his players and coaching staff, which he feels has been essential to the effective application of his strategies.  “The players and the coaching staff have a similar goal and speak the same language.  Everyone agreed when we expressed our intention to attack and play with four up front,” he continued.

He also mentioned Iñigo Martinez, who played a small part in the defense the previous season but has now become a key player.  Iñigo used to defend deeper, but he’s changed and is playing at a very high level.  Because of his confidence on the field, he is a leader and a fantastic example for everyone.  His accomplishments are amazing,” Flick said.

The forthcoming encounter against Leganés becomes even more crucial for preserving their four-point lead at the top of the table after they defeated Borussia Dortmund 4-0.  “Every game is considered equally, and the next one is always the most crucial, according to the coaching staff I talk to.  This is our eighth league game remaining, and it will be away from home.  We need to go into it with the same mindset and focus as a Champions League match.
