Chhetri on ISL Final Heartbreak

Following their 2-1 loss to Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League (ISL) final on April 12 in Kolkata, Bengaluru FC’s captain, Sunil Chhetri, voiced his profound regret in a thrilling conclusion that will live on in the memory of supporters.  This defeat follows a difficult but outstanding season for Chhetri, who has performed admirably for the national team and at home.

Chhetri, a 40-year-old veteran, led Bengaluru FC to victory in the 2018–19 campaign.  But this year, in spite of his outstanding achievements, the prized trophy eluded them once more.  After winning the League Winners’ Shield earlier in the season, Mohun Bagan won the Cup as the game came to a close.

“It’s awful to lose.  And this one will be around for a while,” Chhetri openly said on social media, reflecting the opinions of both his teammates and fans.  He thought back on the “what-ifs” that come to mind following such a devastating loss, considering missed chances such as crucial headers and free kicks that may have altered the course of the match.

With 14 goals in 28 games this season, Chhetri demonstrated his abilities and became the top-scoring Indian player. Alaeddine Ajaraie of Morocco finished second overall with 23 goals.  Chhetri has scored an incredible 75 goals in 183 games during his ISL career, which began in 2015.

He encouraged supporters to accept their disappointment in his poignant message, saying, “Go and sink into that tub of ice cream.”  Get that cheat meal.  Don’t go to the gym.  Do whatever it takes to get better.  Resilience is crucial, though, as Chhetri reminded his fans that “we have lost many finals and have only come back stronger.”  At Bengaluru FC, that is the only way we know how to function.

Even though Chhetri declared his retirement from international football in June 2024, he unexpectedly returned in March to compete in international friendly matches against Bangladesh and the Maldives while the ISL was suspended because of the FIFA international window.  Although there may be more difficulties ahead, the Bengaluru FC skipper promises to use this suffering as motivation for their upcoming championship run.
