England striker Harry Kane equals with Alan Shearer in Euro rankings

In Wednesday night's 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, England captain Harry Kane tied Alan Shearer for the most goals scored in a European Championship
Harry Kane becomes England's top scorer

(Football news) After a VAR check on a challenge by Denzel Dumfries resulted in a contentious spot kick awarded to Gareth Southgate’s team, Kane scored from the penalty spot in the round of sixteen.

When the Bayern Munich striker was caught by Dumfries heading towards goal, the referee pointed to the spot on the recommendation of VAR. Kane leveled the score before Ollie Watkins scored a late winner for the Three Lions.

After scoring in the group stage match against Denmark, the 30-year-old joined Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney as the only English players to score in four different major tournaments.

The goal versus the Danes was also his fifth in European Championships, becoming only the 23rd player to reach that tally in the competition’s history and moving level with the likes of Marco van Basten, Robert Lewandowski and Zinedine Zidane.

However, he moved onto six with his header against Slovakia in the round of 16, and six then became seven on Wednesday evening, as he expertly found the bottom corner from the penalty spot.

Kane is now his country’s joint all-time leading European Championship goalscorer alongside Shearer, who played in nine games at the famous tournament, and he will be bidding to move out on his own when the Three Lions tackle Spain in Sunday’s final.
