England leave out Bairstow, Moeen for Australia white-ball series

Moeen Ali,  Jonny Bairstow and Chris Jordan are not included in England’s white-ball selections for the forthcoming series against Australia. England fell to India in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup, where all three of them were a part of the setup. Five uncapped players who have all shown promise on the home circuit—Jordan Cox, Josh Hull, Jacob Bethell, John Turner, and Dan Mousley—have replaced them in the T20I team.

Premier pacer Jofra Archer and regular England white-ball captain Jos Buttler will also be back in action. While Archer’s workload for the Southern Brave was under observation, it appears that he will play in his first One-Day International (ODI) since March 2023, Buttler has fully recovered from the calf injury that held him out of action for the entire Hundred.

Considering the dynamism of the wicket-keeper batter at the top of the order, Cox’s choice is perhaps the most obvious of the bunch. In all of England’s domestic white-ball competitions, including The Hundred and T20 Blast, he has been extremely successful. John Turner dazzled everyone during The Hundred with his speed and hustle, while Josh Hull’s left-arm angle and hit-the-deck ability make him an x-factor.

Although batting is their better position, both Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell have been effective all-round players. Their selection demonstrates England’s continued predilection for utility players in the short formats.

The T20I match against Australia begins a day after the planned end of the Test series, and hence Harry Brook, Matthew Potts, Gus Atkinson, and Jamie Smith—all players in the current Test series against Sri Lanka—will only be included in the ODIs.

Ben Stokes, who was sidelined for the summer due to a hamstring strain, and Mark Wood, who suffered a thigh injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka, were not eligible for selection. Joe Root is rested from the ODI team.

Starting on September 11, the arch-rivals will square off in a three-match Twenty20 International series. Following that, there will be five One-Day Internationals (ODIs), which will be an important prelude to the Champions Trophy. Following the split between Matthew Mott and England, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the team’s acting coach during the series.

England T20I squad: Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, John Turner
