Durban Super Giants (DSG) completes a convincing win over MI Capetown

(Cricket news) Durban Super Giants (DSG) inflicted a convincing 36-run defeat on MI Cape Town in the 16th Match of the SA20. Opting to bowl MICT managed to keep DSG to a par score of 157/6 but it proved more than enough on a tricky surface where the home side only managed to score 121/9 in reply.

DSG got off to a promising start with the openers looking good. George Linde drew first blood, removing Tony de Zorzi and Quinton de Kock in successive deliveries. However a 46-run stand between Matthew Breetzke (48 off 46) and JJ Smuts (26 off 23) ensured a steady recovery for the visitors.

Thomas Kaber broke the threatening 3rd wicket stand in the tenth over to end Smuts’ stay in the middle and then trapped the in-form Heinrich Klaasen LBW cheaply in his following over. Soon after Klaasen’s dismissal Marcus Stoinis was out hit wicket which further worsened the situation reducing them to 94/5.

Breetzke missed out on a half-century by just a couple, but a late burst from Mulder helped DSG reach a respectable total of 157 runs. Mulder put up 38 off just 20 balls at a strike rate of 190 to take his team past 150.

The par score of 157, however proved to be enough on a dry track that slowed down as the game progressed. Sam Curran (38) was the only batter who looked to be timing it right in his 27-ball knock as he stitched a 48-run stand with Dewald Brevis (21 off 19) after the hosts slipped to 39/3 in 7 overs. Several other batters got starts but neither managed to convert it into anything substantial.

Stoinis got rid of both the set batters in his succeeding overs to break the momentum for MICT, while Noor struck with some big blows dismissing Liam Livingstone and Kieron Pollard in the 15th over ending with superb figures of 3/22. DSG picked up their fourth win of the season to be placed second in the points table now, behind Paarl Royals only on NRR.

Brief scores: Durban Super Giants 157/6 in 20 overs (Matthew Breetzke 48, Wiaan Mulder 38*; George Linde 2-15, Thomas Kaber 2-20) MI Cape Town 121/9 in 20 overs (Sam Curran 38; Marcus Stoinis 3-18, Noor Ahmad 3-22)
