(Football news) The visitors have lost each of their last four league games, despite the fact that the hosts last experienced victory in the start of October. Although they haven’t won any of their last ten Bundesliga games, Darmstadt hasn’t had much cause for celebration lately. However, in their penultimate 2023 game, they did manage to earn a crucial point in a 3-3 draw against Hoffenheim.

The Lilies are only three points away of safety despite having only collected 10 points from their first 16 games. Only in the 2016–17 season have they amassed less points (eight) at this juncture in a top division campaign. They are now tied for third place in the relegation zone with Koln and Mainz 05.

The Darmstadt manager acknowledged after the game that he “saw the failures” of his team, especially in the last third after missing numerous opportunities. Torsten Lieberknecht’s team started 2024 in a disappointing manner as they lost 2-1 in a friendly match against second-tier team Holstein Kiel.

In order to improve their chances of surviving into the second half of the season, Darmstadt needs to address those problems as soon as possible. They have a difficult slate of games ahead of them, including matches against Union Berlin, Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayer Leverkusen.

Borussia Dortmund has dropped out of the running for the Bundesliga title after winning just one of their last eight league games, including a four-game losing streak in December, while Darmstadt is having trouble finishing near the bottom of the table.

At the end of 2023, BVB surrendered points in back-to-back 1-1 matches with Augsburg and Mainz, the bottom-half teams. As a result, they found themselves in fifth position in the Bundesliga, 15 points behind leaders Leverkusen and six behind fourth-place RB Leipzig.
