Does Erling Haaland’s Manchester City contract have a release clause?

(Football news) Erling Haaland is proving to be the next poster boy of football. The Norwegian is all over the news for both on field performances and off field reports. In just 12 games for Manchester City, Haaland has managed to score 19 goals. He is absolutely flying and has set the Premier League on fire. Off the field also he has been in the news because of a potential release clause in his contract. There were reports that claimed that Haaland has a release clause in his contract specifically for Real Madrid. City manager Pep Guardiola dismissed the rumours saying that the striker doesn't have a release clause for Real Madrid or any other club. After Guardiola's comments, Fabrizio Romano reported that Halaand does have a release clause but it's not for Real Madrid but for any club.

The surprising thing is that these reports are coming in just 5 months after Halaand made a big move to Manchester City. The real question now is that is there a realistic chance that Halaand's contract has a release clause? The simple answer is yes. Borussia Dortmund, a club that is known for developing players and selling them for big money had a release clause included for Haaland. €60 million isn't cheap but it is an absolute bargain for a 22 year old striker who is already one of the most prolific players in the world. In interviews his father and former Manchester City player Alfie Haaland has said that they made the decision based on what is good for the player. He also added that City was the team that needed a striker the most while mentioning that Real Madrid already have Karim Benzema. It does feel that the reason for his move to City was just to win trophies and improve his CV rather than his love for the club.

It is a possibility that Halaand's ultimate dream is a move to Real Madrid and for that his team has made the perfect decision of adding a release clause. Why Manchester City would add a release clause is a big question but it is possible. The Blues especially under Pep Guardiola are known for not holding onto players and letting them leave without a fuss. If Halaand in the future wanted to leave, City wouldn't force him to stay even if there wasn't a release clause. Plus it is very likely that Halaand's team would have insisted on a release clause for the transfer to happen. Even if City lose Halaand in 2024, he would have spent 2 years at the club after coming in for a bargain and while selling they will also make a hefty profit.
