Crystal Palace reach agreement with Bayern Munich for Chris Richards

(Football news) Premier League club Crystal Palace have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich for the transfer of 22 year old American international Chris Richards. The defender spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Hoffenheim and with the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus, Richards has been pushed further down the pecking order. The player joined Bayern Munich on loan from FC Dallas in 2018 before signing a permanent deal in January 2019.

The deal is a good bit of business from Bayern Munich who signed the defender for a meagre sum of €1.1 million from Dallas and will be selling him for a price of €15-20 million. A five year contract has already been agreed by the two parties and FC Dallas will receive 35% of the transfer fee (around €5.25-7 million) as part of their sell-on clause. Richards is a versatile defender who has made 5 appearances for Bayern, 30 appearances in the Bundesliga for Hoffenheim and has 8 caps for the USA National team.

As things stand, Richards will represent USA at the 2022 Qatar World Cup later this year, partnering with Walker Zimmerman but he will need to perform consistently for Palace in order to not lose his place to Aaron Long. Another player in contention for Gregg Berhalter’s side is Cameron Carter-Vickers after his brilliant season with Celtic which eventually led to his loan spell becoming permanent from Tottenham.
