Chelsea’s history of terrible luck with strikers continues

(Football news) Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to sell Timo Werner back to RB Leipzig for €20m. The London club bought him for £47.5 m back in 2020. Werner never really settled in at Chelsea and always looked like a shadow of a player he was in Germany. He scored only 10 goals in 53 appearances for the club and was criticised for his lack of finishing ability in front of goal. Chelsea have also sent Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan after a dreadful last season. The Blues have always had really bad luck when it comes to strikers. Lukaku and Werner are just the latest examples as the list is endless.

Chelsea have had only two prolific strikers i.e Didier Drogba and Diego Costa in the past 20 years or so. Drogba is widely considered as one of the best players in the history of Chelsea who had two different spells at the club. He scored 104 goals in 254 appearances which doesn't look too impressive but he was a big game player. Costa on the other hand had a good 3 year period at Chelsea where he scored 52 goals in 89 games. His exit from the club was controversial but he was still successful as he won 2 Premier Leagues titles and a League Cup. Apart from the two all the other strikers that Chelsea have had over the years have never been able to settle at the club. Players like Nicholas Anelka and Olivier Giroud were somewhat successful but never turned out to be one of the best in the league.

Chelsea's worst striker signing has to be Fernando Torres who was bought for £50m in 2011. The Spaniard came in from Liverpool as one of the hottest properties in world football. He could only manage 20 goals in 110 appearances for the club. Chelsea bought the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Alexandre Pato and Radamel Falcao on loan but none of them managed to make a mark at Stamford Bridge. Players like Hernan Crespo, Andrea Shevchenko and Samuel Eto'o were among the best strikers in the world but none worked their magic at Chelsea. Alvaro Morata was one striker who had an incredible start to his Chelsea career but then dropped straight back down after less than half a season. Chelsea need to find another striker before the end of the window and reports suggest that they are considering Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
