(Football News) Chelsea concluded the signing of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic from Major League Soccer club New England Revolution.
The 23-year-old Serbia international has inked a seven-year contract with Chelsea, where he will begin by assuming the role of backup to the newly acquired summer goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez. Although the transfer fee wasn’t officially disclosed by the clubs, reports from British media suggest the deal amounted to £14 million ($17.6 million).
Expressing his excitement, Petrovic stated, “The prospect of playing in the Premier League is something I eagerly anticipate, and I look forward to garnering valuable experience here at Chelsea. I’m eager to meet my new teammates and step onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge.”
Throughout the current season, Petrovic amassed 22 appearances for New England, earning him a spot in the MLS All-Star team. He joins the ranks at Stamford Bridge as the latest addition, amidst the backdrop of the club’s substantial spending spree exceeding $1 billion over the past 18 months, under the leadership of American ownership led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
However, despite these investments, the club has registered just a solitary victory in its initial three matches of the season. Mauricio Pochettino, after his team’s triumph over Luton on Friday, emphasized the ongoing pursuit of further signings, saying, “We still require one more offensive player. We’ll explore the possibilities of making it happen.”
