(Cricket news) 11 years after their maiden BBL trophy, Brisbane Heat added another silverware to their cabinet with a comfortable 54-run win over Sydney Sixers at the SCG on Wednesday (January 24).

Being put into bat Brisbane Heat got off to a shaky start as they lost Peirson in the very first over. Josh Brown and the Heat’s skipper McSweeney took things under control and piled up a 85-run stand to the set the platform. The SCG surface did play better than the recent games but it was still fractionally on the slower side.

Brown and, McSweeney both, however were dismissed in a matter of just 3 balls to bring the Sixers back in the game. Renshaw and Bryant then put on 57 runs to steady the ship and keep the momentum going, including a power surge that produced 31 runs. Sean Abbott (4-32) showed his death bowling prowess with a cluster of wickets towards the back end but Heat got to 166 which was always going to be a tough total to chase down at the SCG, more so in a tournament final.

The chase never really got going for the Sixers with Daniel Hughes perishing in the very first over to Michael Neser. Spencer Johnson (4/26) once again led the bowling effort with a match-winning spell. Jack Edwards and Josh Philippe hit a flurry of boundaries inside the powerplay, but weren’t able to convert it big. Edward’s dismissal to Johnson, kickstarted a downward spiral for the hosts did not manage to get back into the game thereafter. Skipper Moises Henriques tried to dig in but he wasn’t able to get the tempo right. The Heat bowlers were clinical as a unit with everyone chipping in as they secured a 54-run victory
