(Football news) Bayern Munich bounced back from a goal down and went on to score four times in the first half against Augsburg to a 5-3 victory in the Bavarian derby on Saturday. After this result they went two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. Fresh from their 2-0 Champions League round-of-16 victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern suffered a shock when the visitors took the lead courtesy of Mergim Berisha after just two minutes.

Bayern were without their top scorer as the injury absence of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who was on target against PSG as the Bavarian giants had little trouble scoring. Joao Cancelo after a brilliant cameo against PSG in the Champions League scored his first goal for Bayern in the 15th-minute shot which cancelled out Augsburg’s lead. Bayern then scored three goals before the break as defender Benjamin Pavard scored twice and Leroy Sane headed in their fourth goal from close range right on the stroke of half-time.

Augsburg after the half time break as they recovered by pulling a goal back with Berisha’s penalty on the hour but an unmarked Alphonso Davies made sure that the possibility of comeback was squashed when he tapped in at the far post to make it 5-2 and restored Bayern’s three-goal lead. Augsburg did manage to get a consolation goal when they capped off an entertaining afternoon with a stoppage time goal from Irvin Cardona.

The Bavarians who are chasing a record-extending 11th straight league title, are now on 52 points and they are two points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, whose 2023 winning streak in the league was snapped by Schalke 04 following a 2-2 draw. Meanwhile RB Leipzig moved up to third in the standings with 45 points after their 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
