(Football news) The champions will try to finish with a third straight victory even though they are unable to overtake leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the rankings; in the meantime, their hosts have recently halted an unsettling run of losses.

Bayern Munich easily defeated a Stuttgart team that had trailed them by just one point heading into the game, their penultimate home match of the year, after suffering a humiliating loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the league the previous time out.

Sunday night’s triumph for Bayern saw star striker Harry Kane reach 20 goals for the season. With three points more than RB Leipzig and a far better goal differential, Bayern secured second place at the mid-season break.

While they tied a historic record set by the Bavarian giants themselves in the 1970s by scoring goals in their 64th straight Bundesliga home game, Bayer Leverkusen retained their title as “winter champions” over the weekend with their 3-0 victory.

Despite this, Thomas Tuchel’s club appears to have bounced back from their shocking 5-1 thrashing in Frankfurt after upsetting dark horses Stuttgart 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Before terminating Manchester United’s European campaign, Bayern had advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League. They had won their group by a significant margin and were now paired with Lazio in the opening round of the knockout stages.

Die Roten’s only goal on Wednesday will be to win at Wolfsburg since they have to try to pull in Leverkusen before they can resume their pursuit of continental glory in February.

Wolfsburg’s latest league victory over the defending German champions, Bayern Munich, dates back to January 2015. The team has only defeated Bayern Munich four times in their Bundesliga existence. The Wolves have lost 14 games and only managed two draws since then.

With history stacked against his present club, former Bayern manager Nico Kovac welcomes his old side to the Volkswagen Arena. Before being fired, Kovac managed 65 games at the Allianz Arena and won the league, DFB-Pokal, and Supercup.
