(Football news) The La Liga 2021/22 season has been officially concluded and it has gone from bad to worse for Barcelona. The Catalan club after a tough season was hoping for a decent finish which hasn't happened because after their goalless draw away at Getafe, the Blaugrana lost 2-0 to Villarreal at home. This was the first time in 13 years that Villarreal had won at the Nou Camp. The game perfectly summed up Barcelona's season which certainly one which their fans would want to forget.
Barcelona had nothing to play for in the match while Villarreal needed a win to guarantee their Europa Conference League spot. Xavi's men had an overwhelming 70% possession for the 90 minutes but didn't manage to create a single big chance. Villarreal took the lead in the 42nd minute when Dani Pareja set up Alfonso Pedraza who broke the deadlock. In the 55th minute Adama Traore, who was already having a bad game, unintentionally gave the ball straight to Moi Gomez in the Barcelona box. Gomez scored the 2nd to give Villarreal the 2nd after the Blaugrana looked dead and buried. Barcelona ended the season 13 points behind champions Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid ended the season with a 2-1 win away at Real Sociedad. The hosts were by far the better side in the 1st half, as Rafinha came very close to scoring a couple of times. Reinildo survived a red card after a cynical looking challenge which wasn't even given as a foul. Atléti came back strongly in the 2nd half and were rewarded as Rodrigo De Paul's incredible long range effort gave them the lead in the 50th minute. 18 minutes later Koke assisted Angel Correa who doubled the visitors' advantage. Sociedad did pull a goal back in the dying minutes of the game. Adnan Janzaj's free kick was saved by Jan Oblak but Jon Guridi was there on the follow up to head the ball into an empty net.
