Here’s why Divock Origi has a cult status at Liverpool

(Football news) Divock Origi's current contract at Liverpool ends at the end of the season. The striker has already agreed a deal with AC Milan which will be announced once the season is over. In his 4 full seasons at Liverpool, Origi scored 41 goals in 175 appearances. Origi also had a rather unsuccessful loan spell at Wolfsburg. Liverpool signed the Belgian from Lille in 2014 for £10 million. After spending a year on loan at Lille, Origi came to Liverpool under new manager Jurgen Klopp.

On his imminent transfer away from Merseyside, Klopp said "We will miss Divock Origi if he leaves, he will explode wherever he goes. He is a world-class striker, he is a legend and will stay a legend forever". Liverpool fans just like their manager consider Divock Origi a legend, which isn't a term one would usually use to describe a player who was never a guaranteed starter or first choice. The reason that Origi is considered a legend is something that is very unique. Calling him a 'Cult Legend' would definitely be appropriate.

In the last 2 seasons when the whole squad was fit, Origi was often an unused substitute. Origi has never been one of the first names on the team sheet but he always stepped up for Liverpool in big games whenever called upon. The striker has scored big goals in big games which have been so crucial for the reds. Perhaps his best came in the 2019 Champions League when Liverpool were 3-0 down against Barcelona after the first leg of the semi final. Before the 2nd leg, Klopp was handed a massive blow as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah suffered injuries. Origi turned up and scored 2 goals at Anfield as Liverpool won 4-0 and advanced to the final. In the final against Tottenham Hotspur Origi scored the 2nd goal as Liverpool won 2-0 to lift their 6th UCL trophy.

Origi has iconic goals against Everton and Borussia Dortmund to name a few. Despite not getting enough game time, Origi always gives his 100 percent however minutes he plays. AC Milan will be looking to get the absolute best of Divock Origi. They currently have Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud as their two strikers, both of whom are past their prime. Origi will have a point to prove that he is capable of being the first choice player at a top club.
