Argentina will play Peru in World Qualifiers

Argentina visits Peru on Tuesday night, they will be looking to make it four wins in a row in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group

(Football news) Peru has struggled in this section thus far, managing just one point from three games to occupy ninth place. Lionel Scaloni’s world champions lead the standings with nine points.

The two World Cup final appearances for Peru came in 1970 and 1978, when they made it to the quarterfinals. Peru has participated in five World Cups.

The Red and White team did not make it to the competition in Qatar in 2022, but they did compete in the 2018 World Cup and lost in the group stage.

After losing their last two games against Brazil and Chile, Juan Reynoso’s team launched their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Paraguay last month. With one point from these losses, they are now in ninth place in the section.

After this encounter, Peru will play matches against Bolivia and Venezuela the following month. The results of these matches will determine Peru’s placement in the qualification section.

The fact that La Rojiblanca haven’t defeated Argentina in a competition since June 1997 illustrates how difficult this game will be for them, even though their past two encounters have ended in a draw.

Argentina has won seven straight games in 2023, four of which were friendly matches, and hasn’t lost a step since defeating France in the World Cup final last December.

In the meantime, the defending world champions have triumphed in their first three 2026 qualification games. On September 8, they defeated Ecuador 1-0 to begin their campaign.

After defeating Bolivia 3-0 in their next game, Scaloni’s team defeated Paraguay 1-0 in their last game. Nicolas Otamendi scored the game’s lone goal in the third minute.

Argentina previously missed out on qualifying for the World Cup finals in 1970, therefore their absence from the 2026 tournament would be among the biggest upsets in history.

The White and Sky Blues will be looking to record a fourth straight victory in this group on Tuesday before facing Uruguay and Brazil in two highly anticipated matches next month. The team is really unbeaten since their shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening game at the 2022 World Cup.
