(Tennis news) World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz was put to the test by Nicolas Jarry of Chile, who has a powerful serving style. Prior to Jarry being more involved in the match, the 20-year-old got off to a strong start by winning the first game for the loss of three games.
Jarry levelled the match by winning the second set in a tie-break with powerful baseline hitting. Alcaraz won the crucial third set, but Jarry was still seeking to force a match-deciding fourth set as he led 4-1. Carlos Alcaraz, who is now 43-4 on the year and 7-2 at Wimbledon, rallied back, winning six of the next seven games, to grind out a gruelling victory in just under four hours.
Alexander Zverev, the 19th seed, was stunned by 38th-ranked Berrettini in three tense sets, defying his lack of match practise. The previous finalist took the opening blow after giving up three games.
But despite the fact that the second and third sets were drawn out, Berrettini prevailed in tie-breaks in both to advance to 10-7 in 2023 and 13-3 at Wimbledon. The 2021 finalist dominated the serve, earning 35 of his first-serve points and 86 percent of them.
Head-to-Head
Alcaraz has won two of his three encounters with Berrettini, including their most recent encounter in the quarterfinal of the Rio de Janeiro competition last year. Their first encounter on grass will take place here.
Predictions
With their huge serves, strong hitting off either flank, and fluid mobility, Alcaraz and Berrettini are both classic baseliners.
Alcaraz wins out due to his superior consistency and experience, although Berrettini has a stronger grasscourt background. Carlos has won his past eight matches and is 12-2 on the surface, but Berrettini is 36-7 and has won four titles.
Alcaraz, who is still a novice on grass, might be in big trouble if Berrettini maintains the level of form he displayed against Zverev, despite the fact that he hasn’t played much in 2023. Nevertheless, anticipate another improbable victory for the world number one.
