Zimbabwe T20I Series: Angelo Mathews Makes a Return

(Cricket News) As he did in the recent ODI World Cup, veteran Angelo Mathews has been named in Sri Lanka’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe at home. The 36-year-old Mathews was not included in the team for the 50-over format since 2021 due to injuries, but he was added to the squad later as a replacement. Mathews last played for Sri Lanka in the shortest format back in 2021.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who was acquired by Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL Auction, will take over as Sri Lanka’s full-time captain for the T20I series, while Charith Asalanka will resume his vice-captain role from the ODI side.

In addition to the captain making a comeback from injury, notable returnees in the squad include Nuwan Thushara and Akila Dananjaya. Following a rough start to his career, Thushara has made significant progress in both domestic cricket and franchise leagues around the world.

A fitness test will determine Pathum Nissanka’s participation as the opener has been sidelined, but Dananjaya’s return enforces Sri Lanka’s spin options as they get ready for the forthcoming World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

Speaking of spin options, ambidextrous all-rounder Kamindu Mendis also returns to the squad, replacing Dunith Wellalage and Chamika Karunaratne.

Squad: Wanindu Hasaranga(c), Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Janith Perera, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka. Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka (subject to fitness) , Maheesh Theekshana. Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya.
