In the latest cricket news, The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) today released a press statement congratulating Michelle Enright on being appointed Chief Executive Officer of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Australia 2022 Local Organising Committee.
Enright has been appointed as the first women in Australia to take on a Men’s World Cup, demonstrating the ICC’s commitment towards having more women in leadership positions.
The ICC launched a new mentorship initiative for women, the 100% Future Leaders Programme, earlier this year to offer stronger pathways for emerging women leaders.
This appointment comes after Oliva Thornton was appointed CEO of Cricket ACT in February 2021, becoming the second State Association with a woman as CEO after the WACA.
WACA CEO Christina Matthews, who is a mentor in the Future Leaders Program, said Enright was a fantastic appointment;
“Michelle is an excellent leader and has extensive knowledge and the vast experience to lead the Men’s World Cup next year.
“It’s great to see women are getting more opportunities to take on these senior roles in cricket.
“A more diverse leadership team is proven to provide better decision making as it reflects the community and workplace more accurately
“We need more sporting organisations to actively provide pathways and support for women to reach positions of leadership, and gain all the benefits that come with it.”
Currently 40% of Board members and 63% of the executive management in the WACA’s leadership positions are women.
The WACA, through the WA Cricket Foundation’s Program-Cricket Inspire is also helping to create female leaders in the community.
The aim of this Program is to provide young women in high schools and local cricket clubs with the opportunities and skills required to become future leaders.
