Werner and De Tomas identified as potential back ups for Benzema

(Football news) Real Madrid recently confirmed the departure of Borja Mayoral on a permanent deal to Getafe. The club hasn't had a decent back-up for Karim Benzema since 2018 as Madrid have sold both Luka Jovic and Mayoral which means that Mariano is the only natural back-up left. Mariano is definitely not good enough to play for Real Madrid and the club is looking to sell him but it is complicated due to his wage demands. Carlo Ancelotti has played Eden Hazard as a false 9 throughout pre-season but Real Madrid could sign a back-up striker before transfer window ends. Gabriel Jesus was reported to be Ancelotti's prefered choice but Los Blancos didn't have a non-European spot in the squad. Now the two names being thrown into the mix are Raul de Tomas and Timo Werner.

Timo Werner has reportedly had a fall out with Thomas Tuchel due to the striker's comments about his game time at Chelsea. Werner isn't a proper replacement for Benzema as he has a completely different set of skills but he isn't a good option to have. The German has electric pace which is his biggest strength but his lack of finishing skills is something which has been talked about a lot. Depending on the price, Werner's price tag and personal demands is something which will ultimately determine whether Los Blancos will go after him.

Raul de Tomas is a product of Real Madrid Castilla and has played in the academy for 3 years. He never made an appearance for the first team and had a series of loan moves before a permanent sale. Recently with Espanyol, De Tomas has been one of the most prolific strikers in La Liga. The player is reportedly guaranteed to leave Espanyol with a lot of offers on the table but he is waiting for Real Madrid. De Tomas is a Madrid local who has grown up supporting Real Madrid and it wouldn't be a surprise if the player prioritises a move to Los Blancos. He is a proper number 9 who is a constant goal scoring threat and would be a very good player to bring off the bench. Real Madrid have also identified Edin Dzeko and Benjamin Sesko as options in case they can't land Werner or De Tomas.
