WC 2022: Can Ghana avenge their 2010 loss against Uruguay?

(Football news) Ghana face Uruguay in a repeat of the 2010 quarter finals, knowing that a victory for either side will help them advance to the knockout round of the World Cup alongside Portugal. The Black Stars are second in the group, two points ahead of fourth-placed Uruguay. Ghana will be looking to avenge their 2010 loss against Uruguay following the extraordinary battle between the two teams in the quarter-finals. The South American team progressed to the semi finals via a penalty shootout after the two teams finished on 1-1 after 120 minutes of football, but there was huge controversy with Luis Suarez receiving a red card for literally saving a goal with his hand on the line in the final seconds. Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty kick which sent the contest to penalties where Uruguay reached the semifinal for the first time since 1970.

Ghana has a chance to eliminate Uruguay from the 2022 World Cup. A victory would send Otto Addo’s side into the next round, while a draw would be enough if South Korea does not win against Portugal, who are already through. Should South Korea win against Fernando Santos’s side, then second would be decided on goal difference. Ghana know their job, and it would be a historic moment for the African nation who will progress into the knockout round for the first time since their run to the quarter-finals in 2010. They were eliminated in the group stage in 2014 and failed to qualify for the World Cup four years ago in Russia.

Uruguay this World Cup has found it difficult to impress, drawing 0-0 with South Korea in their opening match before losing 2-0 to Portugal on Monday, which has subsequently left his side at the bottom of Group H and facing an early exit from the competition. Diego Alonso’s side will be eliminated if they lose or draw this match, with only a win being good enough. Three points would be enough to advance if South Korea does not beat Portugal, although if both teams triumph, then second will be decided on goal difference.

Uruguay famously won the World Cup in 1930 and 1950 and certainly know what it takes to make a deep run into the competition after finishing fourth at the 2010 competition before reaching the round of 16 and quarter-finals in 2014 and 2018. The South American nation have not been knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage since 2002, which was the first time that it had happened since the 1974 World Cup, so them getting eliminated will again be a shock. La Celeste found it difficult to get going in their opening two games at the 2022 competition and they will now be taking on Ghana who will be super spirited as they will have revenge on their mind.
