(Cricket News) After attending his brother’s wedding in the Hunter Valley and making a quick getaway to reach Cessnock airport, David Warner was originally scheduled to land at the SCG on Friday when he plays for Sydney Thunder against Sydney Sixers.
However, that plan was scrapped, and he will now likely land at the SCG on the outfield, roughly where the “Thanks Dave” logo was painted during his farewell Test. If the weather holds, he is expected to arrive around 5 p.m. for what could be a sellout fixture.
Gurinder Sandhu, the quick for Thunder, stated, “He is going to put in a lot of work to come and play for us. We love having him here. Last year he was awesome for us, maybe did not score as many runs as he would have liked, but it was great to have him around the group and passing on knowledge. He is one of the better team men. All the fans get to enjoy him playing cricket.”
“He is a bit Hollywood, isn’t he, that is very Davey,” Sean Abbott of Sydney Sixers joked. “I got the Lime bike in today and I will be doing the same tomorrow night and riding out the gate as Davey lands.
“I am glad they are making it happen because think everyone in the country who is a fan of cricket wants to see David Warner in the BBL and I am really looking forward to coming up against him. One of the best players in the world and has been for a long time.”
Sixers, who are looking to lock in a finals spot, will have Steven Smith available for the game with some of Australia’s Test players squeezing in BBL appearances in the gap between the Pakistan and West Indies series.
Warner signed a big-money two-year deal with Thunder ahead of last season as part of Cricket Australia’s huge push to get international stars back into the tournament. He has indicated his desire to return next season although he will fit appearances around his commentary work on the India Test series.
Warner’s match against the Sixers is scheduled to be one of his three appearances for Thunder this season after he retired from Test cricket. Although the club has little chance of making it to the knockout stages, Warner would not have been able to play in those games because he was scheduled to play in the ILT20 in the United Arab Emirates.
Nevertheless, Warner is now anticipated to return from that tournament to play in the T20I series against the West Indies, having continued to be available in that format prior to a final international retirement following the T20 World Cup in June.
