(Cricket News) Wanindu Hasaranga delivered a stellar performance, taking a fifer to propel Sri Lanka into the Super 6 stage of the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers. Unfortunately for Ireland, their defeat dashed their hopes of advancing to the World Cup.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s remarkable achievement included his third consecutive five-wicket haul in ODIs, matching the record set by Waqar Younis for the most consecutive five-fors in Men’s ODIs. His five scalps included the important dismissals of Andrew Balbirnie, Harry Tector, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, and Joshua Little, as he concluded the match with impressive figures of 5/79.

During the game, Sri Lanka amassed a formidable total of 325 runs, driven by an outstanding century from Dimuth Karunaratne, who scored 103 runs, and a fine knock of 82 by Sadeera Samarawickrama. Dhananjaya de Silva also contributed with a valuable 42 runs towards the end of the innings.

During their chase, Ireland encountered a rough start as they lost six wickets within the initial 20 overs courtesy of Wanindu Hasranga. Openers Paul Stirling, Andy McBrine, Andrew Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker, Harry Tector, and Curtis Campher all departed in quick succession, creating a steady procession back to the pavilion.

In the end, Ireland’s innings came to a close at 192 runs, resulting in a significant 133-run defeat. This loss to Sri Lanka at Queen Sports Club had additional consequences, as it secured spots in the Super Six for both Oman and Scotland, along with Sri Lanka.
