(Football news) Thiago Silva ever since joining Chelsea he has been a key figure for them since the summer of 2020. According to sources there were some positive talks this week that had taken place and a deal was close to being agreed last week only as Chelsea have announced his contract extension till 2024. Although Chelsea have pursued a policy of signing younger players to long-term contracts, Silva’s on the other hand is viewed as a vital component of the squad’s development under head coach Graham Potter.

Despite his age Silva has been a mainstay at the heart of Chelsea’s defence, including their dream run to the Champions League title in 2021. Amid the ownership change off the pitch, and the change of manager mid season, the former AC Milan and Fluminense man has started 18 of Chelsea’s 21 Premier League matches this season. Silva, who has gone on to make 113 international appearances and subsequently captained Brazil to the quarter-finals of the World Cup in December where they lost to Croatia on penalties.

The Brazil defender who turned 38 joined the Blues from Paris St-Germain in 2020 and helped the club to their 2nd Champions League title in his first full season. He has since then gone on to make 106 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and also reached two FA Cup finals and an EFL Cup final. He lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time in his career when they defeated Manchester City 1-0 in Porto in 2021, before ensuring that they won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup which were added to his CV following wins over Villarreal in Belfast and Palmeiras in Abu Dhabi respectively.

I could not have imagined that, but really it is a very special moment for me to sign and stay at Chelsea.”
