Uruguay close the gap on third as Chile and Columbia put themselves in a tough position to qualify

(Football news) With the headline act of matchweek 6 between Brazil and Argentina getting suspended by the health authorities, the other teams played out an exciting week of fixtures as Uruguay's victory helped enhance their chances of qualification but World Cup regulars Chile are in a tough position in the table.

Uruguay comfortably won 4-2 against Bolivia, Oscar Tabarez’s side were left disappointed last week as they drew against Peru but the performance against Bolivia got them back on track. Missing their talismans Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Uruguayians depended on Valvedere to provide the magic who scored in the first half to give them a much deserved lead. The second half began in the same manner as debutant Augustin Alvarez scored his first goal for Uruguay but the performance was rounded off by Giorgian de Arrascaeta who scored a brace. With this performance Uruguay are in 4th position with 12 points from 8 matches.

Chile drew 0-0 against Ecuador in what was a very disappointing performance from the former Copa America champions. Chile couldn’t assert their dominance even after Junior Somoza of Ecuador got a red card. This draw puts Chile in a very tough position in the group as they have only 7 points from 8 matches getting only one victory and are in 8th position in the group. Chile need to at least win 5 matches from their remaining 8 matches to stand a chance to qualify.

Colombia drew 1-1 against Paraguay as it was a very unenterprising performance from the Columbians. The first half began with Paraguay putting all the pressure on the Columbians which resulted in them taking the lead through Antonio Sanabria but the story of the second was a little different as Juan Cuadrado’s penalty salvaged a hard fought draw for them. Colombia now have 10 points and stand 5th in the group.

The matches to keep an eye that will take place on 10th September are:
