(Cricket News) Indian fast bowler Umesh Yadav has inked a deal with English County side Essex, competing in Division One, for the remainder of the 2023 championship season.

Stepping in with three matches left, he has taken the place of the injured New Zealand bowler Doug Bracewell, becoming the team’s second active foreign player for the season, alongside South Africa’s Simon Harmer.

This marks Umesh’s second stint in County cricket, following his initial experience last season with Middlesex in Division Two, where he secured four wickets at an average of 71.50. Unfortunately, his debut County term was curtailed after three matches due to a quadriceps injury sustained during a One-Day Cup match against Gloucestershire.

In the upcoming matches against Middlesex (at home), Hampshire (at home), and Northamptonshire (away), Umesh will be vying for a place in Essex’s playing XI.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Umesh stated in a club press release, “I am really pleased to join Essex and make what I hope will be some valuable contributions to the team’s success this year. I enjoyed playing in England with Middlesex last season, and it will be good to return and test myself in those conditions again, especially in the midst of a title race.”

Umesh boasts an impressive record, having represented India in 57 Tests, 75 ODIs, and nine T20Is, taking a total of 288 international wickets. His most recent appearance for India in Test cricket occurred a couple of months ago during the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at The Oval, where he clinched two wickets for 131 runs in a match that India lost.

Commenting on the inclusion of Umesh in the squad, Essex’s head coach Anthony McGrath remarked, “Umesh is an exceptional addition to our team, and we are well aware of the impact he can make on our bowling lineup during this critical phase of the season.” He further added, “With over a decade of experience and a track record of taking wickets at the highest levels of the sport, we anticipate not only his contribution to our ongoing campaign but also his ability to impart his insights to our emerging talents.”

Essex, currently positioned second, is set to engage in their upcoming County fixture against Middlesex on September 4th.
