(Football news) This season has been the season of sacking in many ways. 13 managers have been sacked in La Liga this season while 12 managers have lost their jobs in the Premier League. Things change very quickly in football and when it goes downhill it is the manager that pays the price. Whether it is right or wrong but one thing is clear that it more often than not works. At this moment in time Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City are without a manager. At the end of the season Sevilla will also be without a manager while Real Madrid could also be looking for a change.
Here are 10 managers who are out of a job:
1. Zinedine Zidane
Zidane was one of the greatest players of all time and he had a lot of expectations when he became a manager. He matched those expectations at Real Madrid where he won 3 Champions, 1 La Liga, 1 Spanish Super Cup, 2 UEFA Super Cup and 2 FIFA Club World Cups in his first spell of 2 ½ years. Then in his 2nd spell he won another La Liga and Spanish Super Cup. Both times he left the job by his own wish and has now been out of a job for 3 years. He was with the PSG job and the France national team job on numerous occasions but that hasn’t happened.
2. Luis Enrique
Luis Enrique’s moderate spells as the manager of AS Roma and Celta Vigo. He then went to Barcelona where despite struggles and criticism in the beginning he won the treble in his very first season. In the 2nd season he again won the Copa Del Rey and La Liga along with the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup and Club World Cup. In his 3rd and last season, Enrique won the Copa Del Rey and didn’t renew his contract.
He later became the manager of Spain leading them in the Euros and the World Cup. Despite playing well for the majority of the time, he was criticised for his favouritism to players. He was knocked out of the Euros and the World Cup on penalties before getting the sack. The Spaniard is now out of a job and the Premier League is a very likely destination for him.
3. Antonio Conte
Antonio Conte has had a very successful career as the manager of Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan but his spell at Tottenham Hotspur especially this year didn’t go to plan. He was sacked after a series of bad results but it was majorly because of his explosive press conference where he criticised the players and the club as a whole. He will now be looking at a different challenge where the club can back him financially.
4. Mauricio Pochettino
Despite never winning a trophy at Espanyol and Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino was always considered a good manager who at times over-achieved. At PSG in his only season in charge he won the Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Trophée des Champions but his failure in the Champions League led to his dismissal. He has been linked with a return to Tottenham Hotspur for a while. He was also on Manchester United’s list before they signed Erik Ten Hag. According to reports he is Florentino Perez’s favourite for Real Madrid’s manager post in case Carlo Ancelotti leaves.
5. Graham Potter
Graham Potter was really successful as the manager of Brighton. He left the post to join Chelsea and now after a torrid time he has been sacked. The Chelsea job was very difficult for him with so many players to manage and plus the expectations from him. He came in and replaced a manager like Thomas Tuchel which added more pressure. Now Potter will be looking for a new job next season because he has shown at Brighton that he is a good manager.
6. Brendon Rodgers
Brendon Rodgers on the weekend was sacked by Leicester City. This season things did go haywire for the club as they are in the relegation zone. However Rodgers won the FA Cup and the Community Shield in his career which is an incredible achievement. He becomes a very good candidate to take over Tottenham Hotspur or any other Premier League club.
7. Marcelo Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa was adored as the manager of Leeds United. He was sacked and replaced by Jesse Marsch last season. Since then he has been linked with a couple of jobs in England and Spain but nothing has materialised. He has a very unique style of management where his team become workhorses. He is a candidate to take over Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.
8. Julian Nagelsmann
Julian Nagelsmann was shockingly sacked by Bayern Munich a couple of weeks ago. In his short career at Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, 1899 Hoffenheim he has achieved a lot of success. Now he is on the list of Real Madrid and Chelsea to become their next manager.
9. Joachim Low
Joachim Low was manager of Germany for 10 years during which he won them the World Cup. Low is always seen as an international manager but he will be keen on leaving a mark at club level as well. The German has been linked to Real Madrid in the past but other than that his name is never mentioned at club level.
10. Rafa Benitez
Rafa Benitez was sacked by Everton last season and his career is going nowhere. He had successful spells at Liverpool and Valencia but that is in the past. He will be keen to prove himself one more time at the highest level.
