Thomas Muller signs a contract extension with Bayern Munich

(Football news) Thomas Muller extended his contract with Bayern Munich until 2024, which was announced on Tuesday, with the German international set to spend his entire professional footballing career with the record 32 times Bundesliga champions, who he joined as a 10-year-old. Since turning professional with Bayern in 2008, Muller has made 624 appearances, scoring 226 goals and assisting 242 more. He was also part of Bayern squads which won the Champions League title in both 2013 and 2020.

He was 18 years, 11 months and two days old. Muller has gone on to win 11 league titles, six DFB Pokals, seven German Supercups, two Champions Leagues, two European Super Cups and two Club World Cups. The German has been an ever present figure in the Bayern line up and has been a first choice for whichever coach that has come and gone. Muller has always been the silent assassin in the team, quietly doing his job without much attention to him. Last season, he broke the record for the most assists in the Bundesliga with 24 assists in 36 matches. He has been the top assist maker over the last five years and his stats are better than the likes of Kevin Bruyne and Lionel Messi. At 32, it looks like he’s just getting better but Bayern will hope that he influences the team with his leadership skills also.

"The journey we have taken together since I joined the youth team in 2000 has been a fantastic success story so far," said Muller, 32, who won a record 11th league title with the Bavarians this season.

"It gives me immense pleasure to wear the red colours year after year, on and off the pitch – even if the wind blows in your face from time to time. So, let's keep going together!"

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn said, "Thomas Müller is an icon who wears the club badge in his heart. FC Bayern has always been characterised by continuity, and therefore we're pleased that we've managed to extend the contract of this important player. He's someone who assumes leadership and is also an important character in the dressing room with his personality."

"You can't imagine Thomas Müller without FC Bayern – nor FC Bayern without Thomas Müller. That's why we're very happy that Thomas has extended his contract until summer 2024," added sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

"Thomas is a leader who's hungry for success, and a role model on and off the pitch who embodies FC Bayern better than anyone."
