Third placed Atletico Madrid play away at Girona

Having remained unbeaten for 6 games, Atletico Madrid gear up for a tough away fixture
Atletico Madrid

(Football news) Atletico Madrid will be looking for 3 points as they take on Girona away from home. The Rojiblancos are coming into the game after an incredible 6-1 win against Sevilla. Atletico Madrid only have La Liga title to fight for and even there they are 20 points behind table toppers Barcelona. They will be keen to stay 3rd on the table and qualify for the Champions League this season. Girona are currently comfortable in 12th spot but they could still make a late dash to a Conference League finish. They will come into this game after a hard fought 3-2 loss away at Getafe.

Atletico Madrid will be without Reinildo, Rodrigo De Paul and Sergio Reguilon. Argentine duo Angel Correa and Nahuel Molina will return from suspension. Diego Simeone will have a rough choice to make between Alvaro Morata and Memphis Depay as both scored 2 goals last weekend. Depay is likely to get the nod as he waited he long time to get his first start for the club and when he got it, the Dutchman scored twice. There is an outside chance that both of them could start with Antoine Griezmann as a number 10 or a winger but it is unlikely. Griezmann has been in incredible form for Atlético Madrid this season and he is rolling back the years.

Girona will be missing Alexander Callens, Yangel Herrera, Yan Couto and Ibrahima Kebe who are all injured. Their main task will be to not get sucked into Atletico Madrid’s defense as that will result in a counter attack by the away side. The Rojiblancos are always compact in defense and it will be difficult to break them down. Girona will fancy their chances as they have scored 11 goals in their last 3 games. Striker duo Christian Stuani and Valentin Castellanos will be the key men for Girona. Midfielder Alex Garcia will also have a big role to play.
